"A band as savage as they were whimsical, Half Man Half Biscuit provided an unexpected dessert for those British post-punk teenagers who lamented the demise of bands with bite. Nigel Blackwell's inimitable songwriting on the minutiae of life, football and TV celebs quickly garnered cult status, particularly live, where fans could eagerly chant back his wise words." (Patrick Thorne)
Four Lads who shook The Wirral, HMHB are one of the UK's biggest and best cult bands, armed with 11 albums worth of songs and championed by the late great John Peel, this band bring a blend of tongue-in-cheek Northern wit, with melodic and high energy indie folk songs.
Frontman and song-writer Nigel Blackwell got into making music at the start of the 80s as an alternative way to spend the day from ‘robbing cars and playing football like normal people do’. Inspired to start a band by listening to John Peel’s radio shows he moved through a couple of early attempts before forming Half Man Half biscuit. Always reluctant to get involved in the media circus that comes with even the most modest success, HMHB split up for 4 years after it all got a bit silly around their first two singles, and twice turned down offers to appear on The Tube because they’d rather go watch Tranmere Rovers, not even tempted when Channel 4 offered to helicopter then to the match after their appearance.
This is definitely a gig not to be missed because to watch this band live will make you fall in love with music all over again.
